Recirculated Rinses 1 and 2 can be designed to the same specifications. The body should reach rinse 1 within one minute of exiting the paint bath.  Rinse volumes of 50 GPM per 100 ft.2 (9.3M2) per minute have proven quite adequate. Spray nozzles should be adjusted to flood all surfaces of the body, both interior and exterior. Exterior surfaces are easily cleaned and require approximately 50% of the spray nozzles. Interior surfaces require flooding and direct spray to rinse those areas prone to runouts (see Figure 14).

FlatJet nozzles made by Spraying Systems are recommended for exterior body rinsing and are helpful in controlling foam.  VeeJet nozzles are

acceptable but tend to atomize the permeate and cause foam.  Spray headers on 18 inch (45cm) centers and nozzles 18" from the body permit good rinsing and prevent spray pattern interaction, which can result in excessive foaming.  Floor headers must be equipped with individual control valves to prevent spraying into the sanitary pan. Nozzles for interior areas will vary depending upon requirements, but 30-40%, zero-degree nozzles are required for spraying across the body and for roof-rail rinsing.  Piping should be of stainless steel or a combination of stainless steel and PVC.

The systems with the least amount of foam are designed so that the car bodies are close to the floor and provide for a small "lake" below the rinse headers. These "lakes" constitute an integral part of the rinse reservoir and form the pump well when vertical pumps are used. The lakes should notextend beyond the zone risers. The reservoir should have a capacity of 3-to-4 times the pumped volume. The system design should include provision for agitation on the floor of the tank, and the agitation should be continuous, even during non-production periods.

Long shaft or vertical turbine pumps are in common use and should be employed for the recirculated rinses to eliminate the problems associated with seals  required for horizontal pumps. When vertical pumps are used, a foam baffle (note Figure 14.)  should be constructed to extend within 12 inches (30 cm.) of the bottom of the pump well to minimize foam migration outside the rinse. Rinse pressure should be 5-10 psi at the nozzle.  Circulation should be provided 24 hrs/day for agitation and filtration.

Rinse tanks can be made of steel coated with Flakeline 600L or equivilent or of 305 or 304 stainless steel.  Rinses should be filtered to 25 microns (maximum) with the filter located between the pump and the spray headers.  The simplest, most nearly fail-safe rinses overflow by gravity from the ultrafiltrate storage tank to the rinse stages until the paint rich ultrafiltrate returns to the dip tank. Counterflowing should be maintained during non-production periods to reduce the paint solids in the rinses.

The fresh ultrafiltrate rinse can be positioned immediately after the last header in the second recirculated rinse. Only 10-20 seconds of drain time is required before the application of fresh ultrafiltrate.
