Solids are consumed during the deposition process. The components used are referred to as feed. Feed consists of a concentrated pigment paste and low-viscosity, milky-colored resin. Feed is delivered to PPG customers as two components for two reasons:

The addition ratios of paste and resin can be varied to modify the coating characteristics required by local operating conditions.

Pigment paste is usually delivered at a higher viscosity than the resin. If the paste were pre-blended with resin, the local operator might experience difficulty with settling because of reduced viscosity caused by the resin.

The pigments used in electropaints must be carefully chosen. Those which are too water soluble or those which react with water should not be used.

The polymers and pigments have been discussed previously. Coalescing solvents are water-miscible glycol ethers which aid in the water-dispersibility of the resin and enhance coating uniformity.

When the film is deposited, some coalescing (the flowing together of resin particles) takes place. This action helps build film resistance and permits the formation of uniform films.

During baking, the coalescing solvents enable the film to flow.
